The study was conducted by researchers from the Department of Biomatic Sciences at the University of Mississippi, the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Georgetown University in the United States, published in the Jilicobiology Journal (Glycobiology), and wrote about the Yurrick Alrt.
“The marine life produces compounds with unique structures that are often rare or not present in the Earth’s vertebrates, so sugar compounds in the sea cucumber are unique. They do not usually see in other organisms, and for this reason they deserve to be studied,” said Marwa Farraj, a PhD student in the Department of Biomatic Science at the University of Mississippi.
Human cells, and cells of most mammals, cover with precise hair -like structures called glycan, which help in cellular communication, immune responses, and identify threats such as pathogens.
Cancer cells have changed the expression of some enzymes, including SULF-2 (SULF-2), which in turn adjusts the structure of the glycan, and this amendment helps the spread of cancer.
“Cells are mainly covered with forests of glycanis, and enzymes change the function of this forest, as they are mainly trimmed, if we can inhibit this enzyme, theoretically, we are fighting the spread of cancer,” says Vitor Boumeen, Associate Professor of Drugs from the Department of Biomatic molecular sciences at the University of Mississippi and the study researcher.

Using both computer modeling and laboratory tests, the research team found that sugar-Fucosylated Chondroitin Sulfate)-from one of the types of sea option can effectively inhibit the predecessor-2 enzyme.
“We were able to compare the results that we produced experimentally with what I expected simulation, and the results were consistent, and this gives us greater confidence in the results,” said Robert Durksen, Professor of Medical Chemistry from the Department of Biomatic Molecular Sciences at the University of Mississippi and the study researcher.
Unlike other drugs organizing predecessors -2, the sea cucumber compound does not affect blood clotting, as Joshua Sharp, associate professor of pharmacology at the University of Michigan, who participated in the study, explained.
He said: “As you can imagine if you treat a patient with a molecule that inhibits blood clotting, one of the side effects that can be very devastating is uncontrolled bleeding, so it is very promising that this molecule that we are working specifically does not have this effect.”
As a treatment for cancer extracted from the sea, the sea cucumber compound may be easier in manufacturing and safer in use.
He added: “It is a more useful and clean resource, the marine environment has many advantages compared to traditional sources.”
But the sea cucumber is not abundant so that scientists can collect enough of it to produce medications, so the next step is to find a way to manufacture the sugar compound to test it in the future.
