The loss of 60 immigrants off the coast of Libya news

The International Organization for Migration has expressed its concerns about the loss of at least 60 people at sea with sinking accidents in recent days off the coast of Libya.

The organization said, in a statement on Tuesday, that its search and rescue teams have provided urgent medical care for the survivors upon their arrival to the land.

The regional director of the organization for the Middle East and North Africa region, Othman Belbesi, said that the International Organization for Migration, with “dozens of missing persons and entire families in a state of sadness and despair, renewed its appeal to the international community to enhance search and rescue operations.”

Belbeisi called for guaranteeing the mechanisms of “safe and organized and organized migrants”, and offered his hot condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected by what he described as “tragedy”.

The organization reported that the twelfth of June witnessed the report of the loss of 21 people after a boat sank near the Al -Shahab port in the Tripoli region, and only 5 survivors were found.

She pointed out that among the missing are 6 people from Eritrea, including 3 women, 3 children, 5 Pakistani, 4 Egyptians, and Sudanese, while the identity of 4 other people is still unknown.

She also made it clear that the second accident occurred on June 13, about 35 km west of Tobruk, and quoted the only survivor that fishermen saved, that 39 people were lost in the sea.

The waves were swept away in recent days 3 bodies to the beach, and efforts to identify are still ongoing with the support of the Sudanese community members.

Since the beginning of this year, the organization confirmed that at least 743 people have died while trying to cross Mediterranean Sea To Europe, among them 538 on the Road of the Central Mediterranean alone.

The same organization emphasized that this road remains “the most deadly in the world”, as the risk of smuggling methods increases and rescue capabilities decline, while more restrictions are imposed on humanitarian operations.

The search and rescue program of the International Organization for Migration in Libya aims to reduce these risks by providing emergency assistance to migrants as soon as they got out of the sea and after their rescue from the desert, in addition to supporting local partners with infrastructure and specialized equipment.

It is noteworthy that the organization’s missing immigrant project has documented more than 75 thousand deaths and disappearances since 2014, more than 39 thousand cases of which were recorded in countries affected or near crises, which highlights the ties between displacement, insecurity and the absence of safe immigration paths.
