The Ukrainian President signed Volodimir Zellinski Yesterday, Wednesday, an agreement with the Council of Europe concerned Human rights Democracy and the rule of law to establish a special court to try senior officials in charge of the Russian invasion of Ukraine for the crime of aggression against his country.
The mission of the court, which Kiev and its Western allies announced its establishment on May 9 in the Ukrainian city of Lviv, is to consider the “crime of aggression”, which is outside the authority International Criminal Court.
President Zellinski and the Secretary -General of the Council of Europe signed Alan Perseh the agreement at the Council’s headquarters in the French city of Strasbourg.
“This is a really very important step, and every war criminal must know that justice will be fulfilled, and this includes Russia. We are now strengthening legal work in a serious way. “
“The road is still long in front of us. Today’s agreement is only the beginning, and we have to take real steps to succeed. It will require close political and legal cooperation to ensure that every Russian war criminal will face justice, including the president Vladimir Putin“.
It is noteworthy that Ukraine demanded the establishment of such a court since the Russian invasion in February 2022, accusing the Russian forces of committing thousands of war crimes, and the Russians are intended to be tried to organize the invasion.
The 46 -member Europe Council, which was established in the wake of World War II To support human rights and the rule of law, the court on May 9, saying that its aim is to be complementary to the international felony of the court and block legal gaps in prosecutions.
Theoretically, this court can prosecute senior Russian officials for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, up to President Putin.
The Council of Europe, which is the monitoring of rights and democracy on the continent, includes 46 member states, including Ukraine, and Russia was expelled from it in 2022 after its attack on Ukraine.
It is known that the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against Putin, accusing him of deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine Illegally.
