The first independent survey of the number of martyrs in Gaza Strip About 84,000 people were martyred between October 2023 and early January 2025 as a result of the Israeli genocide war.
The study, published on the pre -printing server, last week, stated that more than half of the martyrs were women between the ages of 18 and 64, or children or people over the age of 65.
Since the beginning of the war, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza has been the main institution that counted deaths in the region, where it was regularly publishing detailed lists for the people who were martyred.
On June 25, the latest statistics reported 56,200 martyrs. However, some questioned the reliability of the ministry’s numbers and the studies that are based on it, especially with the development of the war and the damage of the medical centers on which the Ministry relies on obtaining death data.
The latest figures are not based on the ministry’s data, but it may be inaccurate due to the difficulty of counting the number of deaths in a war area. However, these numbers are similar to those announced by another research team earlier this year, which used a different statistical method, according to Bitrick Paul, statistical and research director of the “Human Rights Data Analysis Group” in San Francisco, California.
Independent
To conduct an independent survey of deaths, the researchers worked with the Palestinian Center for Political Research and Non -profit in Ramallah, for a random survey of the chosen families that represent the population throughout the Gaza Strip.
This included people who live in temporary shelters and tents. The survey team was unable to enter the north of Gaza, Gaza City or Rafah due to the continued Israeli aggression and evacuation orders, but many people who live in those areas were displaced to the areas surveyed.
Over a week, starting from December 30, 2024, the survey team visited two thousand families and conducted interviews with adults. The poll participants, who were granted the right to hide their identities, were asked to mention the number of individuals in their families on October 6, 2023, and any children who have been born since then, then report the fate of all family members now and whether they are alive, dead or missing.
For those who were martyred, the survey participants were asked to determine whether they were martyred for violent or non -violent reasons.
“The strength of this work comes from field work,” says Paul, who found it unusual for the team to be able to conduct such a detailed survey amid the extermination war.
Violent and non -violent deaths
Researchers estimate that in the 15 months of January 5th, there were nearly 75 thousand and 200 violent deaths in Gaza. 8,540 people also died for non -violent reasons as a result of the war.
But there may be more non -violent deaths since the survey was conducted, says the study author Michael Spagat, economic researcher at the Royal Holway College at the University of London, in Igham.
The health of the Palestinians and their arrival to health care was well before the war, but this is likely to have changed with the continuation of the war, according to the participating author, Debara, Goha-Mubbere, the epidemic specialist in civilian conflict at the Belgian University of Louvan.
“This does not reduce its importance, but on the contrary, it is still in its right time, as the crisis continues and its intensity has been more severely intensified over the past three months,” says Laith Jamal Abu Rashad, an epidemic scientist who specializes in infectious diseases at Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar in Doha.
Since October 7, 2023, continue Israel – American support- wage war genocide On the Gaza Strip, more than 186,000 martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, have resulted in the Gaza Strip, as well as more than 11,000 missing under the rubble.
The two -month ceasefire ended between the Islamic Resistance Movement (agitationAnd Israel on March 18. Since then, the vital infrastructure, including hospitals, has been severely damaged in the Gaza Strip, hundreds of thousands of their homes have been displaced, and humanitarian aid has been restricted.
The last statistics correspond to the estimate of another research team earlier this year, which indicated the estimate of 64,60 violent deaths by the end of June 2024.
