The Qatari capital witnessed DohaToday, Saturday, the signing of a declaration of principles between the Congolese government andM22 rebel movementIt provides for a permanent ceasefire, in a move described as articulated in efforts to bring peace and national reconciliation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The signing came after a series of complex negotiations hosted by Qatar since last March, and witnessed a direct participation from the disputed parties, under Qatari and with wide international support, including the United States.
The Minister of State at the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Al -Khulaifi, said that the agreement paves the way for a new stage of partnership between all components of the Congolese society, and establishes a practical road map for national reconciliation, noting that “the Qatari efforts in this file began since Doha’s hosting to meet the Rwanda major and the Democratic Congo, last March, which formed a real starting point for dialogue.”
Al -Khulaifi added that the declaration of principles is not limited to stopping violence, but also opens the way for direct negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive peace that addresses the deep roots of the conflict, stressing that Qatar played a pivotal role in bringing the views closer.
