Civil organizations from the Katanga region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with four former managers of the government company “Jemen”, submitted a complaint with the Belgian judiciary for nine members of President Felix Chisicidi family, including his wife, son, and brothers.

The complaint deposited with the Federal Prosecution in Brussels stated that accusations were involved in “corruption and misuse of mineral resources” in the region rich in cobalt.

During a press conference held in the Belgian capital, Brussels, one of the complainants confirmed that the documents include “certificates indicating illegal grants of mineral backfilling sites that harmed local companies.” He added that “there are serious suspicions of corruption, money laundering and environmental violations, and the names of members of the President’s family are repeated regularly in these files.”

The provider of the complaint was based on the fact that some of the targets hold the Belgian citizenship, allowing local courts to open investigations under Belgian law.

They also pointed to what they considered a “judicial deficit” within the Democratic Congo, which led them to resort to international courts to stop “impunity” and to address what they described as “authoritarian collusion” in the looting of mineral wealth.
