Australian airline Quantas announced on Wednesday that it had opened an investigation after being subjected to a “large” cyber attack, during which pirates penetrated a system containing sensitive data for 6 million of its customers.
“We continue to investigate the extent of stolen data, but we expect it to be large,” the company said – in a statement.
She added that the system that affected the electronic attack contains the records of 6 million customers, but it does not contain the details of the payment cards or passport numbers.
But the company warned – in its statement – that the pirates were able to reach the email addresses for customers, their phone numbers and their birth dates.
The statement stressed that the attack did not lead to “any influence on Quantas operations or its security.”
The CEO of the company, Vanessa Hudson, was quoted as saying: “We strongly apologize to our customers, and we realize the uncertainty caused by this.”
She added: “Our customers take us to their personal information, and we take this responsibility seriously.”
The US Federal Bureau announced (FBILast week, a group of electronic crimes bearing the name “Skarrd Spider” targets airlines, and that the Hawaiian air lines and the Canadian company “West Gate” have already reported breakthroughs.
“This makes this matter to worry in particular, its size and coordination, amid new reports that Quantas is only the latest victims of breakthroughs,” said Mark Thomas, Director of Security Services in Australia, at the Electronic Security Company, “Arctic Wolf”.
