Divisions within the government team in Cameroon are escalating over President Paia’s candidacy for the elections scheduled for next October.
While the government spokesperson René Emmanuel Sadi said that all the possibilities are at risk of nominating the president and his withdrawal from the race, the head of the ruling Democratic Assembly Party, Jacques Vami, announced that there is no doubt that the president will participate in the expected presidential race.
This variation in the statements issued by senior officials, reflects a clear division between the government and the ruling party regarding the political future of the Cameroonian president, who is the most president of the world, and spent 40 years in power.
For his part, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research said that the party has not officially announced its candidate, but Article 27 of the system of the party’s basic for the party is clear, as it says that the president is the only candidate.
This contrast came after two government ministers announced their decision to run for the presidential elections, after they worked with President Paul Pia for more than 20 years.
President Paul Bia faces strong opposition from the northern states in the country where more than two million voters are counted according to the figures issued by the Independent National Electoral Committee.
The government had faced the English -speaking northern regions with severe repression after the 2016 protests, which turned into an armed conflict that killed more than 6 thousand citizens.
The current President Paul Bia is one of the old generation that has a strong relationship with European countries, and he is accused of having a lot of money and balances in many Western capitals.
