While the US administration continues its moves to end the war between Russia AndUkraineChinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made a statement contrary to his country’s impartial position in this war.
This raised questions if they were China It is about to change its position and restore its strategic calculations in light of the developments and transformations that the world is witnessing not far from it.
Chinese and Western media quoted the Chinese Foreign Minister as saying that his country “does not want to see Russia is losing the war in Ukraine”, because this may raise fears that the United States will turn its full focus towards it.
The sudden statement came during the Chinese minister’s meeting with the European Union’s foreign relations official, Kaya Kalas, last Tuesday on the sidelines of the talks of the two sides in Brussels, which asked Beijing to stop undermining the security of Europe.
Since the start of the Russian war on Ukraine in February 2022, China has been regularly calling for peace talks and respect for the territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine.
Beijing has not officially adopted the statements of its recent foreign minister, and this appears through statements made by a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 4 days after the minister’s statements, during which she made sure to confirm that “China does not interfere in the Ukrainian issue, and that its position is objective and fixed: negotiation, ceasefire, and peace,” considering that the continuation of the Ukrainian crisis does not serve the interests of anyone.
The same opinion, adopted by many political analysts in China, who excluded their country changed its declared positions towards the Russian -Ukrainian war, and among these Professor Victor Gao, Vice President of the China and Globalization Center, who said in statements to the “Beyond the News” program that the continuity of this war does not serve any party.
Many in China believe that the Chinese minister’s statement has been incorrectly interpreted, or that “there are those who are trying to mislead the Chinese position”, but Gao accused the forces in the West of chances and providing a wrong interpretation of China’s position.
Tension with Europe
Although Beijing re -repeated its stance towards the war, it appears to be on the threshold of a political crisis that is not simple with Europe, and this is evident from the Kalas statements, which called on Beijing to stop what it called undermining the security of Europe.
“Chinese companies provide a lifeline for Moscow to maintain their war effort against Ukraine, and Beijing carries out electronic attacks and interferes with our democracies … and these actions harm the security of Europe,” Callas said.
European concerns are explained by a professor of international relations at the University of Geneva, Dr. Hosni Abidi, as it stems from the Europeans’ awareness that had it not been for Chinese support for Russia, it would not have been able to continue its war on Ukraine.
But the Europeans cannot give up China because of the economic and political relations they bring together.
It seems that the Europeans are not the only ones who question China’s positions towards the Russian -Ukrainian war. From the point of view of James Robbins, the former US Deputy Secretary of Defense, China benefits from continuing the war in Ukraine and is really afraid of Washington’s leadership towards it if the war was put in place.
What worries Washington is that China showed its aspiration to expand its influence in the region and expand its naval fleet, which would harm American interests, according to what Robbins told “Beyond the News.”
From the viewpoint of US President Donald Trump’s supporters, he tried since his return to the White House 6 months ago to improve his country’s relations with China, and not to make the issue of the Russian -Ukrainian war stand in front of that, despite his awareness that these relations are commercially and security.
But the Europeans do not trust that any settlements that Trump will reach with China necessarily take into account the interests of the old continent, so they are looking forward to a successful approach with China alone, as Abidi says.
