The most comprehensive study
And on the most prominent international studies that dealt with this issue, the newspaper highlighted a study published by Professor Michael Spagat, a world expert in deaths during violent conflicts, and a team of researchers this week, as it considered it the most comprehensive so far on the issue of deaths in Gaza.
The newspaper pointed out that Spagat, an economist at the Holway College at the University of London, wrote dozens of articles on wars in Iraq, Syria, and Kosovo, and other countries.
She explained that Spagat, with the help of Palestinian politics, Dr. Khalil Al -Shaqaqi, conducted a survey of 2000 families in Gaza, including about 10,000 people, and concluded that until January 2025, about 75 thousand and 200 people were martyred in Gaza as a result of violence during the war, the majority of whom were because of Israeli ammunition.
She added: “At that time, the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip estimated the number of martyrs since the beginning of the war at 45 thousand and 660 people, and in other words, the Ministry of Health data reduced the real number of martyrs at about 40%.”
The newspaper pointed out that the study was not subject to a review of the peer, as it was published as an initial copy, but its results were very similar to the results of a study conducted in completely different methods and published last January researchers from the London College of Health and Equatorial Medicine, and this group also estimated the disparity between the data of the Ministry of Health and the real numbers by about 40%.
Indirect effects
The Hebrew newspaper stated that the study of Spagat and his colleagues are trying to answer the question of excessive deaths in the sector, in other words, about the number of people who were martyred as a result of the indirect effects of war: hunger, cold and diseases that were impossible to treat due to the destruction of the health system, and other factors.
“Even without calculating the expected excessive waves of deaths in the future, the combination of victims of violence and deaths caused by diseases and hunger led to the death of 83,740 people before January (2025), taking into account the survey and excessive deaths,” she said in this regard.
“Since then, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, more than 10,000 people have been killed, and this does not include those in the category of excessive deaths, and the bottom line is that even if the war has not exceeded after a line of 100,000 dead, it is very close to that.”
The newspaper quoted Professor Spagat as saying that this data places the war in the Gaza Strip as one of the bloodiest conflicts in the 21st century.
He continued, “Even if the total number of war victims in Syria, Ukraine and Sudan is higher in each case, Gaza appears to be the first rank in terms of the percentage of deaths from fighters to non -fighters, as well as in terms of death rate in relation to the size of the population.”
The newspaper pointed out that, according to the survey data, which are compatible with the data of the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 56% of the victims are either children under 18 years, or women, and this is an exceptional number compared to almost all other conflicts since World War II.
According to the newspaper, the data collected and published by Spagat indicates that the percentage of women and children victims of violence in Gaza exceeds twice the percentage in almost all recent conflicts, adding, “Including, for example, civil wars in Kosovo (20%), North Ethiopia (9%), Syria (20%), Colombia (21%), Iraq (17%), and Sudan (23%).”
Among the other extremist data that was found in the study is the percentage of victims to the population, Spagat says, “I think we may have reached a death rate approximately 4% of the population … I am not sure of another case in the 21st century that reached this level.”
The newspaper pointed out that in contrast to the richness of the data provided by the lists of official ministries and research studies, which confirm the numbers of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, the silence of Israeli official speakers about the number of victims is remarkable.
