The European Football Association (UEFA) said on Monday that one of the fans died during Portugal’s victory over Spain in the European Champions League final at Allianz Arena in Munich on Sunday.
The ESPN network reported that the fan fell from the second section of the main runway to the lower seats area in the last minutes of the match.
“There was a medical emergency at the Munich stadium, and despite the relevant efforts made by the medical team, the person died unfortunately at 00:06 local time. We extend our sincere condolences to his loved ones at this difficult time,” UEFA spokesman said in a statement.
Representatives from the two teams expressed their sympathy after the match that Portugal won 5-3 with a penalty shootout.
Spain coach Louis de La Fuente offered his condolences at the press conference that followed the match, saying, “I would like to express my sincere condolences because the death of a fan reminds us of what is important in life.”
A representative of the Portuguese national team made a similar condolence statement, saying that the death “casts a shadow over our victory today”, while the Spanish coach of Portugal, Roberto Martinis, expressed the same feelings, saying that it is “very sad news.”
It is estimated that the fan fell from a height of about 8 meters, without knowing how the accident happened.
“I convert the family of the fan who died. This has cast a shadow for our victory,” Portuguese defender Nuno Mandez said.
