Government condemnation

The government of the left president condemned Gustavo Petro “Strongly” by attacking Orepe during an election occasion in the west of the country.

A statement issued by the presidency said, “This violent action is not only an attack on his person, but also on democracy, freedom of thought and the legal practice of politics in Colombia.”

Orepe is one of the most critical critics of Petro, a member of the Democratic Central Party led by former President Alvaro Orepe who ruled Colombia from 2002 to 2010.

Miguel Urby announced last October that he aspires to be elected as a president in 2026 to succeed Petro, who is strongly opposed to Petro.

The mayor of Boogota Carlos Gallan said that Urby underwent his injury, adding that “the shooter was arrested.”

Defense Secretary Pedro Sanchez condemned the attack and announced on the X platform that the authorities were providing $ 700,000 a reward for any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.
