An academic and international official with left -wing orientations chosen by the rules of the Socialist Party – and not his leadership – in 2015 to take over the party’s leadership, then King Felipe VI assigned him in February 2016 to form the government despite the failure of his party to the parliamentary majority.
After announcing his candidacy for the prime minister, Sanchez stated that he is ready to retrieve Spain from the swamp in it, and that he is ready for dialogue with all parties, whether left or right to form a government coalition.
He took a critical position on the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since its beginnings. On November 26, 2023 and during the truce of the first war, Sanchez visited his Belgian counterpart, the Rafah crossing, revealing that Egypt was delivered 4 tons of medical materials, to help her treat the injured and patients coming from Gaza. He said that “the killing of innocent civilians without discrimination (in the Gaza Strip) is absolutely unacceptable,” and called for “establishing a two -state solution today and before any other time, to end the war between the two sides.” These statements prompted the Israeli Foreign Minister at the time, Eli Cohen, to summon the Spanish and Belgium ambassadors to protest and accused them of “supporting terrorism.”
On November 30, 2023, Sanchez stated in an interview with the Spanish -owned Spanish “RTV” channel: “With the pictures we see and the increasing numbers of children who die, I have a serious doubt that (Israel) adheres to international humanitarian law,” and added: “What we see in Gaza is unacceptable.” Cohen replied, saying to the X platform, “Because of the shameful statements of the Spanish Prime Minister, who again repeated baseless allegations, I decided to summon the Israeli ambassador to Spain again to Jerusalem for consultation.”
When hundreds of thousands of Spaniards came out in 90 cities and town, including the capital Madrid on January 20, 2024, in response to the slogan “Let’s stop the genocide in Palestine,” Sanchez responded, saying during a conference of his socialist party in Galicia, “We are all with them.” He added, “We condemn the terrible enthusiasm attacks, and we demand an unconditional and urgent release of all detainees with the movement … but in the same design, we say to the government of (Benjamin) Netanyahu that the indiscriminate shelling and the killing of boys and girls and thousands of people in Gaza is unacceptable.”
On May 24, the Spain government announced the recognition of the State of Palestine and was followed by Norway and Ireland. On May 28, Sanchez said in a televised speech that the recognition of the State of Palestine is a historical decision with one goal, which is to help the Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace. He continued: “We are acting according to what is expected from a great country like Spain and we bear our responsibility to search for peace, security and prosperity for all peoples.” Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz, Sanchez, accused the collusion of inciting the extermination of the Jews and committing war crimes against them.
Israel looked at Sanchez and its socialist party after its last positions. On June 10, 2024, Kats published a message described as non -diplomatic on the “X” website, in which he mocks the Spanish Prime Minister and his deputy Diaz, due to the results of their party in the European elections. “The Spanish people have punished the Sanchez and Bihada Diaz coalition with a resounding defeat in the elections,” Kats said in a tweet, and attached the tweet in a manner created by artificial intelligence, showing left -wing politicians with broken eggs over their heads. He commented on the photo by saying: “It turns out that the embrace of the killers and rapists from Hamas does not bear fruit.”
