It should be noted that the tripartite mechanism between Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia was launched in 2017 and stopped in 2019, and the meeting in Cairo comes within the framework of reactivating this joint mechanism, based on the keenness of the three countries to support security and stability in Libya, according to a second statement of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

The meeting came about two weeks after security tensions in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, represented in armed clashes between the forces of the national unity government and armed formations, in addition to political tensions represented in demonstrations and protests against the government of national unity and others in support of them.
