The transitional military authorities in Guinea Conakry have appointed a new election committee to oversee the constitutional referendum scheduled for next September, as well as the public polling expected at the end of this year.
The new committee, called it the “General Administration of Elections”, and came to replace the Independent National Committee for the elections that the opposition was criticizing, accusing it of biasing the previous governments, and lenient in falsifying the will of the voters.
This committee has formed through a presidential decree issued by the President of the Transitional Military Council, General Mamadi Dumboya, and broadcast by National TV.
According to the decree, the new administration is alone authorized to supervise the organization of the upcoming constitutional referendum, as well as all elections throughout the national territory.
In a briefing on the press, government spokesman Othman Diallo said that this administration will restore confidence between the people and the government, noting that moving to this formula is necessary to ensure transparent and fair elections.
Rejection of the opposition
For its part, the opposition parties expressed their rejection of the new administration, as they came from the selection of the ruling authorities, and without consulting with the rest of the living political forces in the country.
The media official of the Union for Democracy, Suleiman Suza Contei, said that the new administration represents a military domination of the next electoral process, and will contribute to the gruit grabbing power.
In the same direction, the head of the Bloc Party expressed liberalism Exhibitions Vaya Melimono about his concern about this step, considering that she will leave the door open for electoral forgery.
The opposition parties take the administration of the new elections, as all of their members were appointed under a presidential decree and with the choice of the president himself.
Also, the text established for it made its work under the tutelage of the Ministry of Interior and the Regional Administration, which devotes its dependence on the government according to the opposition’s opinion.
The head of the ruling military council in Guinea had assumed the presidency of the country after a military coup on the fifth of September 2021, through which he toppled former president Alfa Conde, and agreed with the economic group of West countries Africa On a schedule for the country’s return to the democratic path on the end of 2024, which has not been done.
