An important stage in Guinea has ended from the stages of moving towards civil rule and returning to the democratic path, where Parliament last Thursday evening presented the new constitution to the President of the Military Council, General Mamadi Dumboya, before it was referred to the referendum on September 21.

The handover ceremony was held at the People’s Palace during the reception of the head of the transitional phase of members of parliament, members of the government and a number of religious leaders, notables and ambassadors accredited in the capital, Conakry, but the heads of the opposition parties boycotted the meeting despite their official call by the presidency.

Before meeting the President, the deputies held a closed session to discuss fundamental issues such as the duration and number of the presidential term.

According to parliamentary sources, the draft of the new constitution proposed only two states to the president, each of them up to 7 years.

The authorities did not allow the media to cover the event, although it witnessed a wide presence, as it constitutes a decisive stage of returning to the democratic path and ending military rule.

Commenting on the event, Prime Minister Bahi Uri said on the National TV screen that the constitutional text of the public will soon be revealed, stressing that it is ready and citizens will be able to see it to discuss and evaluate it.

In a new development, the government ordered the suspension of the Union for Democracy Conference, which was organized this week in the capital, Conakry.

The Union Party is headed by Celine Dali Diallo, who resides in exile, and its followers boycotted the government’s invitation to the presidential palace last Thursday evening to announce the completion of the draft draft constitution.
