Organize Qatar Press Center In the capital Doha Yesterday evening, a symposium entitled “The Press in Yemen.. Challenges of reality and peace opportunities, ”with the participation of a group of Yemeni journalists and the presence of a large number of those interested in Yemeni affairs, and representatives of the Syrian Media Club in Qatar.
In his opening speech, Abdullah Al -Sulaiti, Vice -Chairman of the Qatar Press Center, pointed to the role of the center in supporting journalists, especially in the conflict areas, through training and professional initiatives.
Numbers and violations
Saeed Thabet, director of the Al -Jazeera office in Yemen, reviewed shocking numbers documented by the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate, in cooperation with the International Federation of Journalists, during ten years of war, which included 2014 violation, 46 killings, 482 detention cases, and 244 physical assaults, in addition to the death sentences, torture, and a arbitrary separation.
He also explained that the union, despite not having executive powers, is working in partnership with the International Federation for Pressure and exposing violations, pointing to the financial challenges facing the union since 2013.
Thabet pointed out that most of the journalists today live without regular income, amid almost complete absence of the printed press and the closure of channels, stressing that “a decent living” is what guarantees the independence and dignity journalist.

For his part, Dr. Abdul Rahman Al -Shami, Professor of Information at Qatar University, talked about the lack of adequate academic studies on peace and hate speech, noting that the conflicting parties have harnessed the media to serve their agendas.
He stressed that “Peace Journal” represents a necessity in the context of Yemen, calling for its inclusion in university curricula, and to activate the role of community radio stations in spreading the culture of understanding.
The journalist Hadeel Al -Yamani also shared her experience while she was winning the 2017 courage award, confirming that she sought to provide people’s voice in the heart of the risks and the fronts of the fighting, noting that many journalists suffer from lack of training, lack of legal protection, and denying them access to information sources.
In turn, the reporter, Muhammad al -Qadi, who is the author of a book on covering the war in Yemen, confirmed that the profession of journalism has turned into a dangerous work, noting that some of his colleagues came out of prisons with physical disabilities, and others who were abused.
He called for the support of “Peace Journalism” through special prizes and training for journalists in conflict areas, calling for documenting press experiences as part of a national narrative.
For his part, journalist Abdul Samad Darwish- the presenter of the symposium- pointed out the importance of the discussion on the reality of the Yemeni press, praising the efforts of the Qatari Center in highlighting the suffering of journalists in Yemen, and others in various areas of the conflict.

Training initiative
The symposium, which was attended by the Yemeni Ambassador to Qatar, Rajeh Badi, concluded with the announcement of the director of the Qatari Press Center, Sadiq Al -Ammari, that the center is ready to support documentation projects for Yemeni journalists, as well as a cooperation agreement with the Qatari Red Crescent to train journalists in conflict areas.
The Qatari Press Center organizes several courses and events, as it aims to contribute to the development of media and journalistic work, and to pay attention to media affairs in accordance with the Qatar 2030 vision, which made investment in people over the pyramid of its priorities, according to a statement of the center’s board of directors.
