The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights rejected German plans to deport criminals to Afghanistan, and said that “conditions on the ground are not yet ready to return.”
“We urge countries not to force the Afghans forcibly,” said Arafat Jamal, the representative of the Commission in Kabul, in response to a journalist’s question during a United Nations press conference in Geneva.
This comes after German Interior Minister Alexander Duprendt said that he is looking forward to talks with the Taliban, who returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, to enable Germany to return convicted criminals.
UN spokesperson for the United Nations Human Rights Office also rejected the idea.
“It is inappropriate to talk about the return of people to Afghanistan at this stage,” the spokeswoman added, noting the continued human rights violations, in light of the Taliban rule, including executions and the suppression of women’s rights.
Germany had suspended deportations to Afghanistan, after the Taliban took control of power.
